Review: Brora 25 year old

Here’s my thoughts on Diageo’s newest limited edition Brora. Next up: the most recent Port Ellen.

Brora, 25 year old, 56.3%, $350
Quite lively for 25 years, with layers of bright fruit (lemon, nectarine, grapefruit, pineapple) on a bed of vanilla and honey. There’s a peppering of dried spice, smoldering ember, and beach pebbles. Lightly smoky, dried spice finish. Very nice. Brora enthusiasts will not be disappointed, but the prices the whisky from this shuttered distillery are creeping up.

    Great review, John. I’d love to try a dram. I tried to order this one when it first came to the USA, but I’m not in one of Diageo’s “major markets” so ….

    It’s good stuff, Bob, but very heavy and oily. If you’re planning to exert yourself to get some, I would go for one of the thirty releases which are much better and only 50 bucks more.

    While I am in agreement with your score for the latest official release of Port Ellen, in my opinion I think this one should have done a little better–93 or 94pts–but that is my own opinion. I loved the buttery peat in this whisky, and the fact that the oak was nowhere near dominating the spirit. While I am also a fan of the 30 year olds released by Diageo referred to by Red, I thought this one had a little more complexity to it.

    Further to my question posed on another of your posts, Port Ellen 29Yr, have you heard anything with respect to the rumours that this may be one of the last bottlings of Brora by Diageo?

    Andrew, I haven not heard anything, but it would seem logical that they will eventually have to run out of stocks. I know that guy who is in charge of the malts for Diageo. He will know, so I’ll reach out to him. If I find out anything, I’ll post it up here.
