Templeton Rye

April 6th, 2009

While in Chicago for WhiskyFest, I had the chance to spend some time with Scott Bush of Templeton Rye from Iowa. He shared some information with me about the rye whiskey he currently has on the market.

Like a few other whiskey entrepreneurs, he’s having another distillery make rye whiskey for him under his specifications until his distillery cranks out his own mature whiskey. He told me that he’s currently on his third batch, and a fourth batch is in the works for a future release.

When will he be bottling his own stuff? Will he blend in some of his own stuff with the rye he’s having made for him?

“Maybe,” Scott told me. Stay tuned…

There’s been a big flap on Twitter lately about the current source of Templeton’s whisky, so much so that Templeton had to issue a release on their site dispelling rumors. Shame, too, because Templeton is a *great* rye…the nose is tremendously fun and just punches you right in the face with rye goodness and then mellows off into honey and citrus tones.

  2. Hello John –

Thank you for the mention. It was great to see you and catch up and thank you and your team for putting on another tremendous event.

I wanted to reach out just to make sure that folks do not think we are trying to be coy with this response, but that we honestly do not yet know. We are rolling in Templeton and have approx 130 barrels stored there. We think they are coming along great but only time will tell.

Our first priority is to ensure that the quality of our product remains consistent. As you well know, that is a laborious and evolving process that will take years.

We have also thought about holding back some or all of these barrels for a special release. Again, we could be talking 8-12 years from now so at best it is an educated guess but I will keep you informed.

Also, I will keep in touch with you on the other project we discussed. All the best!
