Walking the Coast

by Dave Broom

My relationship with Islay started with distillery visits, then the people I met became friends, so we began to holiday there, which led to buying a plot of land and plans to build a house. Inevitably, my relationship to the island’s whiskies changed as well. I began to realize that to really understand the whisky, any whisky, you first must understand the place and how it is impacted upon by various factors. As you can’t learn any of that from books, I went for a nine-mile walk on the west coast from Saligo Bay, via Machir Bay to Kilchiaran Bay, then over to Port Charlotte…and the pub.
