The 2023 Woodford Reserve Derby Bottle Pays Homage to Secretariat
March 2, 2023 –––––– Ted Simmons
The Kentucky Derby is known as “the greatest two minutes in sports,” but for whiskey drinkers it’s a good reason to pour some bourbon. No Derby party would be complete without the race’s trademark drink, the Mint Julep, but for those who like their whiskey straight, Woodford Reserve releases an annual bottle featuring custom artwork, with this year’s edition paying homage to the famed racehorse Secretariat.
The 2023 Woodford Reserve Derby Bottle features artwork from Kentucky native Jaime Corum, the label celebrating the 50th anniversary of Secretariat’s 1973 Derby win by depicting the horse covered in roses in the Winner’s Circle at Churchill Downs. Secretariat is widely considered one of the greatest thoroughbred horses to ever race, winning the Triple Crown with record-breaking times at the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont. Woodford Reserve master distiller Elizabeth McCall calls this the distillery’s most collectible Derby bottle yet. The brand has been releasing specialty bottles honoring the race since 1999.
The 2023 Woodford Derby bottle is available for preorder via reservebar.com for $55 and can be found on retail shelves globally. Like all Woodford Reserve whiskey that isn’t cask strength, it is bottled at 42.5% ABV. The annual Derby bottle makes for a great collector’s item for bourbon and art fans alike, as the labels are among the most artistic designs found on whiskey today.
