Highly respected tequila maker Ana María Romero Mena has joined forces with Casa México Tequila and will lead all of the brand’s tequila-making projects going forward. Romero Mena is a maestra tequilera—a master distiller of tequila—and is well known for her work on Mijenta, a brand she helped create in 2020. Romero Mena will now do double duty, continuing her work with Mijenta while also shaping the future releases of Casa México.

The Casa México portfolio includes blanco, reposado, añejo, and cristalino expressions (each is 40% ABV, and the line ranges in price from $34-$50), and Romero Mena will work on elevating all of them. Romero Mena is globally recognized as both an advocate for tequila tradition and an innovator. Casa México chairman Mickey Gooch says she’s now involved in every aspect of creation for the brand, from selecting agave and yeast to fermentation and distillation, and she’s also ensuring that Casa México maintains its traditional agave piña cooking methods to support its authentic and additive-free tequilas.

In addition to Casa México’s core offerings, Gooch adds that Romero Mena is overseeing the finishing touches on a limited-edition 55% ABV reposado that will be released at the end of this year. He also says that the maestra tequilera will likely create her own special limited-edition tequilas for Casa México, as she’s done with Mijenta.

Actor and entertainer Mario Lopez has been an investor in Casa México for roughly a decade, having helped expand the brand’s reach in the U.S. Lopez remains active with Casa México and will continue to promote both the brand’s and his own Mexican heritage, while also celebrating Casa México tequila’s craftsmanship and the Mexican community alongside Romero Mena.

Casa México is made from Lowlands blue weber agave, and each batch is slow-cooked in traditional brick ovens, naturally fermented, and double distilled in copper stills. The brand is now available in 21 states, with additional markets set to be added next year.

Romero Mena has said she has new projects coming out for both Casa México and Mijenta. No specifics are yet available for Casa México, though Mijenta recently released the maestra tequilera’s special edition Maestra Selection No. 2 (40%, $84), a blanco sourced from single estates in each of Mexico’s five tequila-producing regions.
