Paul Currie, who co-founded single malt Scotch maker Arran Distillery in 1995, ventured into English whisky in 2011 when he co-founded The Lakes Distillery. Situated within the beautiful Lake District National Park in the northwest of England, the distillery is built within a converted mid-19th century dairy barn and has been producing since 2014. The Lakes whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi shows a preference for sherry cask maturation, developing light, fruity, elegant whiskies. He takes an artisanal approach in the blending lab, and has won plaudits in England for his graceful expressions. The distillery's Whiskymaker’s Reserve series launched in 2019. These two expressions, composed from stocks matured in oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, and red wine casks, mark The Lakes’ debut releases in the U.S.

A decadent drop of whisky with aromas of red velvet cake, allspice, red apple, summer berry fruits, citrus peel, plum, and dried fruits. The palate displays the best of The Lakes’ sherry-led house style with honey-drizzled plums, chocolate ginger, red apple, dark vanilla, then assertive pepper and clove spices followed by almond and pecan, with more sherry sweetness as it dilutes, leaving a long spicy finish.

This composition feels keenly attuned to colder nights, with its aromatic array assembling notes of ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, fig, prune, black cherry, dates, red apple, and fruity milk chocolate. The palate picks up the chocolate, adding toffee apple and gentle rolling spices, which boil up to a peppery peak, falling back to reveal roasted pecan, fig, apple, and ground coffee that lead to a satisfying finish of plum pudding, clove, and pepper.
