The nose is quite muted, with red currant, black cherry, quince jelly, old leather, savory juices, and dusty spices. Better news on the palate: red berry, cherry, clove, ginger root, and Dr. Pepper; then, after the alcohol peaks, there’s brown sugar, dark vanilla, herbal notes, tobacco leaf, and hot chocolate powder. The mouthfeel is granular at times, with milk chocolate and tannic fruit skins. Go easy on the water. (174 bottles)
