Jefferson's Reserve Groth Reserve Batch No.2, 45.1%

Price: $80 Issue: Winter 2015 Reviewer: Lew Bryson

Finished in barrels that held cabernet sauvignon wine. There's an immediately off-putting fleshy note, like raw meat coated in sugar. There is mint and fruit sugar aromas as well, but the meat just squats there. Better in the mouth, but rather than melding, the bourbon and wine characters struggle right through to the end, where—incongruously—the wine wins out. An unhappy marriage. Finishes should enhance whiskeys, not frustrate them. Sourced whiskey.
