In its Solum line, Seattle-based Westland uses locally sourced peat from the Skagit Valley. This year’s edition is rife with peppermint, stone fruit, a little must, and char on the nose, with more mint and whiffs of peat on the palate. Spice is present, but doesn’t linger long, overcome by more pressing notes of smoky char, pear, apricot, and coffee. It’s perfectly good, if a bit lacking in flavor variation.
