Updated on November 10th: This morning our sister publication Wine Spectator unveiled its 2023 Wine of the Year. The news followed a week long countdown that started with Wine No. 10 and culminated in today's announcement. The full list of Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines will be published this coming Monday, November 13.
Chosen from thousands of wines tasted by Wine Spectator’s editors throughout the course of the year, the winners comprise a diverse group—ranging from emerging labels and regions to renowned estates exploring new directions, all of them generating that coveted X-factor of creating excitement in the world of wine.
Before considering the X-factor, the editors first target three key ingredients that qualify a wine for consideration: quality, value, and availability. Candidates must have a score of at least 90 points, an appealing price-quality ratio, and a reasonable availability in the marketplace.
While that last requirement is important, many winning wines are limited releases and thus not available everywhere, but the Top 100 is not meant as a shopping list but rather a guide to wines to watch—wines that the editors became particularly passionate about during the course of the year
