On November 14th the New York Marriott Marquis transforms into whisky paradise—and you're invited. WhiskyFest New York is the not-to-be-missed event for everyone who enjoys whisky and other fine spirits. Whether you’re an expert, a fan looking to expand your horizons, or simply starting your whisky journey, WhiskyFest is the place to be. Admission includes access to hundreds of whiskies and other spirits, as well as a Glencairn tasting glass, gourmet buffet, and more.
Plan ahead for an evening that will enrich your tasting experience. Start by visiting the WhiskyFest website to view a selection of whiskies to be poured—and check back often as it’s updated regularly. You’ll find brands you know and likely some favorites, but don’t overlook those you’ve not heard of before. Remember, this night is an opportunity to learn more about your favorites, but also to discover new. Make a priority list of the brands you want to taste, and leave some time to explore others that might pique your interest.
Whisky Advocate editors have a few personal highlights in mind.
“Among scotch whiskies, the coastal expressions like Oban, Glen Scotia (from Campbeltown), and Torabhaig (Isle of Skye) are always fun,” says executive editor David Fleming. “On the Irish side of the ledger, the single pot still whiskeys from Drumshanbo, The Spots, and Redbreast will definitely be worth a visit.”
“Elegant Japanese whiskies from House of Suntory and Fuji and world blends from Hatozaki will be an early part of my game plan for the evening,” says contributing editor Jonny McCormick. On the tequila side, El Tesoro, with its history of whisky cask finishing, offers the perfect bridge between tequila and whisky.”
Editor at large David Savona says, “I’m always on the lookout for peaty scotch, so I’m looking forward to Lagavulin and Laphroaig (especially Elements 3.0). And there is so much great bourbon on hand, including a tempting Knob Creek 18 that is sure to impress.”
“This year, tequila lovers have a wealth of pours available to them, including Cazadores, Don Fulano, Patrón, and more,” says senior editor Julia Higgins notes. "For the mezcal fans, Del Maguey and Ilegal highlight the variety of the spirit, showing just how diverse its flavors can be. In whisky terms, I’m always partial to an American single malt from Balcones."
Associate editor and tasting coordinator Danny Brandon says, “On the American side, Heaven Hill is always a WhiskyFest highlight for me, and I’m looking forward to seeing what gems they’ll be pouring this year. If you’re into big, bold bourbons, be sure to swing by Bib & Tucker, George Dickel, and Redemption for some solid sippers.”
Game Plan Your Night
There are lots of different strategies for exploring WhiskyFest. Some attendees aim to taste only expressions they’ve never tried before, while others target a specific style to do a deep dive. Never tasted Japanese whisky? Pours from Fuji, Komoro, Hatozaki, Hibiki, Roku, Toki, and Yamazaki will all be available. Looking to broaden your Irish whiskey horizons? Taste Drumshanbo, Redbreast, The Spots, Teeling, and Two Stacks.
Scotch lovers can sip Aberfeldy, Aberlour, Bruichladdich, Dewar’s, Glenlivet, Johnnie Walker, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Oban, Torabhaig, and more. American whiskey is also abundant, with favorites like Angel’s Envy, Balcones, Bulleit, Dickel, Hardin’s Creek, Heaven Hill, Jefferson’s, Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Maker’s Mark, Rabbit Hole, and Smooth Ambler, to name a few.
Some attendees bring a list of bottles they’re thinking of buying but want to taste first, while others make a night of tasting hard-to-find limited editions and rare single barrels. Of course, it’s up to you, but having a plan means you’ll be more likely to enjoy the thrill of whisky exploration.
WhiskyFest offers more than whisky, as tequila and other spirits are also available for sampling. Taste blanco, anejo, reposado, and cristalino tequilas, plus mezcal, gin, and liqueurs.
As an event bonus, 10 lucky ticket buyers will be randomly selected for a backstage pass that grants them and a ticketed guest a tasting experience with Whisky Advocate editors 30 minutes before the event begins. Cigar lovers will have access to free samples from Arturo Fuente, Padrón, among others.
A gourmet buffet is available throughout the evening. Take time to sit down and enjoy a hearty meal, and be sure to grab an occasional bite to eat between stops at the booths. Pro tip: Visit the water stations frequently to maintain hydration and keep your palate fresh.
