Auction Update: The 20 Highest Single Bottle Hammer Prices for June
July 3, 2026 –––––– Jonny McCormick
Japanese whisky dominated June’s auction market, accounting for two-thirds of the 20 highest hammer prices, with Yamazaki overtaking Macallan to claim the top spot. With a combined value of $1,360,614, June’s list was worth 53% more than the equivalent list in June 2025, when Yamazaki also topped the table. More than $1 million of June’s combined value was spent on Japanese whisky, while scotch accounted for just 20%, despite making up one third of the entries.
Yamazaki’s rise to the top was accomplished with just two bottles: Yamazaki 1960 Suntory Whisky Meeting Cask No. 2J6001 and the first bottle of Yamazaki 55 year old to appear at auction in a year. It sold at Christie’s New York for a single bid of $200,000. A second Yamazaki 55 year old offered by Whisky Auctioneer attracted bids in excess of $350,000, but ultimately failed to meet a much higher reserve. Had it sold, Yamazaki’s slim lead over Macallan would have been considerably larger.
Yamazaki becomes the third brand to lead the rankings in 2026, following Van Winkle and Macallan, and becomes the first Japanese whisky ever to lead the table. The momentum behind Japanese whisky has been particularly striking: it has set the five highest hammer prices recorded in 2026 so far within the past two months, including the first Japanese whisky ever to sell for more than $1 million (when buyer’s premiums are added). Perhaps most remarkably, Yamazaki has secured first place through the strength of only three bottles, while Macallan—its closest challenger—has made 34 appearances in the year’s 20-highest lists to claim second place.
Despite a major American whiskey sale at Sotheby’s, New York, no bourbon or rye attracted a hammer price high enough to make June’s list. Both Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old single barrels sold well below their pre-sale estimates, with bids of just $7,500 and $11,000; Sotheby’s had reportedly hoped for a combined hammer price over $50,000. In the end, this Clase Azul tequila drew the highest hammer price of the sale, a new auction record for tequila at $28,000.
Karuizawa joined Yamazaki and Macallan as the third brand to surpass $1 million in cumulative sales in the 20-highest list this year. The milestone was helped by the sale of a bottle of Karuizawa 1960 52 year old Cask No. 5627 The Poet, which achieved a hammer price of $264,943 at Whisky Auctioneer’s Kisetsu: Seasons of Japanese Whisky sale. While an impressive result, it was only 42% of the $638,007 sale of Karuizawa 1960 52 year old Cask No. 5627 Treasure Ship at Bonhams Hong Kong in May 2025, despite both bottles originating from the same celebrated release and being identical apart from the netsuke.
The Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Card Series also continued to attract strong collector interest. Bottles of the Jack of Clubs and Ace of Spades releases achieved the highest prices from the series at Whisky Auctioneer, helping Hanyu climb to fifth place in this year’s rankings.
As the market reaches the halfway point of 2026, confidence in the secondary market appears stronger than it was at this stage last year. The combined value of the 120 bottles that appeared on the 20 highest lists during the first six months of the year increased by 24% compared to the same period in 2025. With Japanese whisky continuing to drive many of the market’s headline results, attention now turns to whether this momentum can be sustained through the second half of the year.
