When talking about iconic father/son duos in the sports world, it’s hard to top the combined greatness of NBA superstars Wardell (Dell) and Stephen Curry. Dell Curry had an impressive 16-season career on the court—spending 10 of those years as a shooting guard for the Charlotte Hornets, where he was an all-time points leader—and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 1996. His son Stephen Curry surely needs no introduction, having emerged as one of the apex players of his generation with 10 All-Star appearances, four championships, two MVP nods, and an Olympic gold medal. As Stephen now enters his own 16th season in the NBA, he’s decided to release a special bourbon that pays tribute to his and his father’s legacy and their shared love for the game.
Enter Player Exclusive: Father and Son Edition, the latest bourbon released under Stephen Curry’s Gentleman’s Cut whiskey label. The newcomer has a mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley—coming in with slightly less rye and a significantly higher share of malted barley than the brand’s flagship bourbon. It was distilled in August 2008, and bottled by Kentucky-based Boone County Distilling Co. at 16 years old—referencing the 16 seasons played by both Dell and Stephen—and 50% ABV.
While it isn’t mentioned on the label, this whiskey is technically bottled in bond—having been distilled during a single distillation season, aged for at least 5 years, and bottled at exactly 50% ABV among other regulations.
“Growing up, my father was an amazing role model to me,” said Stephen Curry in a statement. “I’ve always looked up to him and admired his work ethic and skills, so to be able to achieve a milestone that he also accomplished was an amazing feeling.” He explains that the new whiskey was his way of bottling that feeling and commemorating the occasion.
“Gentleman’s Cut has always been at the forefront of celebratory moments for Stephen and our family,” added Dell Curry. “To be able to release a limited-edition bourbon inspired by our time in the NBA is a blessing.”
Around 1,000 bottles of Father and Son Edition were produced, with a suggested retail price of $950. A portion of the bottles are available at select retailers in California, including Bevmo, Costco, SIPS/BevBox, and Safeway. The rest of the bottles can be purchased through Gentleman’s Cut’s mailing list. There’s a limit of one bottle per customer for the mailing list, but those who are interested in buying an additional one can sign up for a waiting list in case any bottles are left over from the original sale.
Gentleman’s Cut is a fairly young brand, having been launched in May 2023. It is owned by Game Changer LLC—a joint venture between Stephen Curry’s partnership company SC30 Inc., John Schwartz from Amuse Bouche winery in Napa, and Boone County Distilling Co. in Kentucky. Boone County Distilling Co. handles the production of Gentleman’s Cut, going under the pseudonym Game Changer Distillery on the whiskey’s labels. The brand’s main offering is an $80 5–7 year old bourbon, which scored modestly with our tasting panel, but it has also releases older and more expensive expressions under the Player’s Exclusive banner. Each Player Exclusive expression sports a different age statement and mashbill; the previous one was a 15 year old that used the same mashbill as the flagship: 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. The brand teased that the next Player Exclusive bottling will be a rye whiskey, though the exact mashbill and age statement are yet undisclosed.
