Jack Daniel's Continues to Climb the Age Ladder With a New 14 Year Old Release

When Jack Daniel introduced its 10 year old expression in 2021, it was the first Jack Daniel’s whiskey to bear an age statement in more than a century. It was greeted with positive reviews and finished at No. 4 in Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 Whiskies of the Year. That was followed by a 12 year old in March of 2023. Now comes a 14 year old release, unveiled yesterday.

The 14 year old is billed as the oldest age statement whiskey from Jack Daniel since the early to mid-1900s. Also released yesterday were Batch 3 of Jack Daniel’s 12 year old, and Batch 4 of the 10 year old.

Jack Daniel’s 14 was created with the same production methods as the core Old No. 7 label, and the 10 and 12 year olds, using the Jack mashbill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. Master distiller Chris Fletcher said the extra aging has created more forward notes of sweet bakery spices and layered oak, with the palate offering cinnamon, butterscotch, leather, oak, and pipe tobacco. But perhaps the most notable differentiator with the 14 year old is its starkly high ABV of 61.3%. It calls to mind the high-proof releases in the distillery’s Coy Hill series, which so far has dropped three expressions—in 2021, 2022, and 2024—and collectively ranged from 61% to 77.55% ABV.

Fletcher, who became assistant master distiller at Jack Daniel in 2014 and master distiller in 2020 upon the departure of predecessor Jeff Arnett, has presided over a remarkable array of new releases at Jack Daniel, which had been long been dismissed by connoisseurs for its boilerplate approach. Over the past five years, the Lynchburg, Tennessee distillery has reinvented itself with a host of special releases, dramatically elevating its reputation among the whiskey cognoscenti. Notably well-received releases have included its Bonded Series, with Jack Daniel’s Bonded becoming our Whisky of the Year in 2022.
