Whisky Watch: The Week's New Releases

March 27, 2026 –––––– Julia Higgins, Aubrey Thompson, Danny Brandon, ,

Aged American whiskey enthusiasts will be cheered by the latest items from Jack Daniel, which has released a new round of 10, 12, and 14 year old Tennessee whiskeys within its Aged Series. Both Blood Oath and Barrell also have new aged whiskies; Blood Oath’s is a bourbon blend of 7 and 12 year old whiskey, while Barrell’s marries 18 year old Kentucky whiskey with 23 and 25 year old Canadian whiskies. And there are plenty more limited edition expressions in this week's roundup: Michter's has announced the 2026 releases of its Shenk’s and Bomberger’s heritage whiskeys, Old Forester has added another rye to its 117 Series, Buffalo Trace has a new addition to its Daniel Weller wheated bourbon line, and Steph Curry has dropped another Gentleman’s Cut Player Exclusive bourbon. Lastly, from Scotland, Dalmore has two new vintage-dated single malts.

ABV: 55%
SRP: $65
Availability: Limited

After releasing the first rye within its 117 Series last year, Old Forester has just introduced yet another rye to the series. This one borrows heavily from techniques that were used for the original 117 High Angel’s Share expression in 2021, which was actually a bourbon. It’s composed of barrels from Old Forester’s heat-cycled warehouse that had exceptionally high evaporation rates. The resulting 110-proof whiskey is bold, concentrated, and with a rich spice character, according to assistant master distiller Caleb Trigo. High Angels’ Share rye will be available at the Old Forester Distillery on Louisville’s Whiskey Row, and at Kentucky retailers, priced at $65/375 ml.

Within the 117 Series, Old Forester has primarily innovated in bourbon—there’s been a bottled in bond bourbon; bourbons finished in Speyside scotch whisky casks, rum barrels, and new charred oak; bourbons aged in specific rickhouses; and bourbons made as they would’ve been over a century ago at the original Old Forester Distillery (whose location in Louisville, 117 West Main Street, is where the series gets its name). While we haven’t reviewed every 117 Series release, we’ve had a chance to savor quite a few, with not one bottle scoring less than 90 points.

Blood Oath Bourbon (Pact 12)

ABV: 49.3%
SRP: $130
Availability: At the distillery next month, with a retail rollout in June

Lux Row has dropped the newest iteration of Blood Oath, a cask finishing-focused whiskey that receives new batches—called “pacts”—each year. The 2026 version blends 7 and 12 year old bourbons with a 7 year old bourbon that’s finished in two separate Italian wine casks—first spending time in barrels that previously held montepulciano (a dry red wine from the Abruzzo region of central Italy) before being transferred into sangiovese (a savory red from Tuscany) barrels. Starting April 25th, it will be available for purchase at Lux Row Distillery in Bardstown. In June 51,000 bottles will be available at retail.

Kentucky independent bottler Barrell Craft Spirits has released a new ultra-aged whiskey as part of its blending-focused Black Label series. The batch accounts for 3,700 bottles.

ABV: 45.6%
SRP: $120
Availability: Limited

Michter’s has debuted this year’s edition of its Shenk’s Homestead and Bomberger’s Declaration whiskeys. The distillery describes the 2026 edition of Shenk’s as rye-forward, though as with last year’s release, the mashbill also includes caramel malt. The whiskey aged in a combination of French oak that was air-dried for two years and American oak air-dried for five years. This year’s Bomberger’s was aged in both chinquapin and Hungarian oak; both barrel types were air seasoned for 3 years and have a custom toast and char.

Together, Shenk’s and Bomberger’s make up the Michter’s Legacy Series, with the former honoring John Shenk, who founded the forebear of the original Michter’s, Shenk’s Distillery, and the latter commemorating Abraham Bomberger, a Dutchman who acquired Shenk’s Distillery in the 1860s and renamed it after himself.

Daniel-Weller-Spelt-Wheated-Bourbon_300.pngDaniel Weller Spelt Wheat

ABV: 47%
SRP: $550
Availability: Limited

The second whiskey in Buffalo Trace’s Daniel Weller line, which explores the influence of various wheat varieties on Weller bourbon, sees spelt wheat replace rye in the mashbill. The resulting 10 year old whiskey is awash with notes of biscuit, baking spice, caramel, dried fruit, and nuttiness, according to the distillery, with the subtle sweetness and nuttiness coming specifically from the spelt wheat. Spelt was chosen not just for its flavor profile, but its historical significance—the wheat was one of the earliest cultivated wheat varieties in the U.S.

The Daniel Weller lineup honors the experimental work of Daniel Weller, a distiller who was the grandfather of William Larue (W.L.) Weller, renowned for making being the first to use wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain in his W.L. Weller & Sons wheated bourbon. The first Daniel Weller whiskey, a bourbon made with Emmer wheat, was released in 2023; Buffalo Trace says you can expect a new Daniel Weller whiskey once every one to two years.

Jack Daniel has unveiled new batches of 10, 12, and 14 year old in its annual Aged Series which spotlights extended maturation and a higher proof than its standard 40% ABV. Each sour mash expression is made from its signature mashbill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. This year’s 10 year old carries the highest proof of the trio, at 58.8% ABV, slightly lower than last year’s at 63.1%. It isn’t the highest ABV for the brand, which has reached major hazmat territory (up to 74.4% ABV) with its high-scoring single barrel Tanyard Hill rye. The 12 year old and 10 year old maintain the same ABVs as previous releases.

The series launched in 2021, marking the first age statements for the brand in over 100 years and was met with high praise: the inaugural 10 year old claimed the No. 4 spot on our Top 20 list of 2021. The 12 year old debuted in March of 2023, followed by the 14 year old in 2025. The whiskeys will be available in limited quantities nationwide beginning this month, and via an online sweepstakes through White Rabbit Bottle Shop in Lynchburg, Tennessee, open for entries until April 7th. Winners have a chance to purchase a bottle, though not a specific expression, and bottles must be picked up at the retailer.

Gentleman’s Cut Player Exclusive: Shacho Bourbon

ABV: 52.5%
SRP:
$250
Availability:
805 bottles

Stephen Curry-owned Gentleman’s Cut is back with another Player Exclusive whiskey: an 11 year old Kentucky straight bourbon made from a mash bill of 78% corn, 13% rye, and 9% malted barley. It’s finished in mizunara oak barrels sourced from Hokkaido, Japan. A one-month reservation period is now open at reservebar.com; after that, it'll be available on Gentleman Cut's website.

While previous Player Exclusive releases have paid homage to Curry’s personal milestones and relationships, this one is named after the Japanese term for leader, “shacho”—a nod not only to Curry’s standing in the NBA, but to leaders of all kinds as well.

Mizunara cask usage outside of Japanese whisky is rare. Until fairly recently, the only American whiskey to use mizunara was Washington-based Bainbridge Organic Distillers with its Yama mizunara cask single grain whiskey launched in 2016. More recent examples include Bardstown Bourbon Co.’s mizunara-finished blend of whiskeys released last year, Indiana’s Starlight has a mizunara-finished bourbon, and Barrell also debuted a bourbon finished in mizunara.

Dalmore has added two new well-aged single malts to the Select Edition collection, an annual vintage-dated collectible series. This year’s batch includes stocks from 2007 and 2010, both bottled at natural color and non-chill filtered. Each one was initially aged in American oak bourbon barrels before being transferred to different sherry casks from the González Byass bodega in Spain. The 2007 edition spent time in apóstoles and amoroso casks, while the 2010 was finished in matusalem and amoroso casks.
