It Started With A $130 Bottle: One Man's Johnnie Walker Collection Is Up For Auction

Some collectors focus on a particular whisky style; others pursue rarity, prestige, or investment potential. Rarer still are single-brand collectors who seek not just exceptional bottles but also packaging variations, advertising, memorabilia, and obscure releases that tell the brand's story. California-based Frans Op den Kamp took that approach with Johnnie Walker, the world’s No.1 scotch whisky brand, amassing a comprehensive collection spanning bottlings from around the globe.

The result of his two-decade pursuit of Johnnie Walker comes to market this September, when Whisky Auctioneer presents the largest and most comprehensive collection of Johnnie Walker ever offered at auction. Transferred from California to Scotland for the sale, the collection consists of more than 600 miniatures, 1,000 pieces of original advertising and memorabilia, and 1,600 full-sized bottles, offering collectors an unusually detailed look at the evolution of one of scotch whisky’s most recognizable brands. Op den Kamp’s fascination with Johnnie Walker began in 1999, when he bought a $130 bottle of Blue Label on his way home from a business trip to New York. That first purchase grew into a 20-year collecting project spanning rare releases, market-specific bottlings, historical labels, and whisky ephemera chronicling the story of the Striding Man.

For Op den Kamp, selling this collection marks the end of a personal journey rather than simply dispersing his whisky cellar. “Parting with the collection is certainly not easy, but I feel I have achieved what I set out to do,” he said in a statement. “I hope these bottles find their way to collectors who discover something that resonates with them, whether that’s a particular whisky, a moment in Johnnie Walker’s history or simply the thrill of the hunt.” He added, “Most of all, I hope it inspires a renewed appreciation for the art of blending and the story of scotch whisky.”

Diageo owns the world’s largest Johnnie Walker archive, and visitors to Johnnie Walker Princes Street in Edinburgh can view an archivist’s display. Whisky Auctioneer has not publicly revealed the estimated value for the Op den Kamp collection, but the scale of its contents will likely attract bidders with a wide range of budgets. More than 500 bottles of Black Label, 280 of Blue Label, and 200 of Red Label offer ample opportunity to pick up older bottles and packaging variations at relatively accessible prices. The collection reaches back more than a century, and early 20^th century examples of Old Highland whisky, the original name for the blend, will be on the block. The sale also includes a number of Johnnie Walker-adjacent single malts from Mortlach, Talisker, and Cardhu that reference John Walker & Sons on the label. From cartoons to figurines, the memorabilia and advertising material may well generate sufficient competition. Whisky Auctioneer’s previous highest hammer price for Johnnie Walker memorabilia was $4,880 in 2016 for three scrapbooks of Johnnie Walker labels from 1930–1960.
