Auction Update: 20 Highest Single Bottle Hammer Prices for August

The 20 highest hammer prices for the first eight months of 2026 topped $7 million, outperforming the same period in 2025 and 2024. The combined value of the 20 highest hammer prices for the first two-thirds of the year was 21% or $1.2 million higher than in 2025. The combined total for August was $644,528, up 16% compared to this month last year, led by the record-setting Macallan TIME:SPACE 84 year old hammer price of $128,487. While competition at the top was tight in July, this sale helped Macallan pull away from rivals and consolidate its lead.

American whiskeys had a strong month with nine entries, the highest number since January 2026, including three Willett bottlings, Van Winkle rarities such as Old Advocate Special Reserve 15 year old, and a gold wax A.H. Hirsch Reserve 18 year old. Five Japanese whiskies made August’s list, including three bottles of Karuizawa, a Hanyu Jack of Clubs, and a Yamazaki Junshin. Scotch made up the remaining places, including the first appearance of Highland Park on the list this year, with Highland Park 50 year old (2020 Release) taking a below-retail winning bid of $18,100.

In late August, Unicorn Auctions ran a charity auction with Bourbon Bonanza and Willett in support of the Guthrie Opportunity Center, Bethany Haven, and other causes. Aside from the selection of great whiskeys on offer, a private Willett barrel selection experience for six people with master distiller Drew Kulsveen reached $160,100, and an ultimate Super Bowl LXI experience for four people, including a tasting of rare and legendary Willett bottlings, took $154,400.

Sotheby’s in New York resumes its auctions this month as the fall auction schedule kicks it up a gear. The sale includes a large selection of wax-sealed Willett bottlings, as well as a bottle of Very Very Old Fitzgerald 15 year old Blackhawk (Est. $40,000–$50,000), a bottle of Bowmore 1968 Arc-54 (Est. $40,000–$60,000), and another gold wax bottle of A.H. Hirsch Reserve 18 year old (Est. $20,000–$30,000). Ahead of its Johnnie Walker Collection sale later this month, Whisky Auctioneer is offering Macallan Anniversary Malt 1928 50 year old, Bowmore 1964 46 year old (which last made the list in March 2026), and a Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 1940 70 year old in its monthly sale. Unicorn Auctions enters the fray with high-value Macallan expressions including Macallan in Lalique 55 year old, Macallan Millennium 1949 50 year old, and a Macallan Red Ribbon 1938. With this formidable array of rarities now heading to auction, the secondary market looks set to finish 2026 on a high.
